Torrington Sedation Clinic has been treating anxious patients for many years and receiving referrals for the past 4 years from dentists in the South West. The clinic treats patients on an NHS and private basis and is one of only two practices in Devon who have a contract with the Devon PCT to provide treatment under sedation. Sedation techniques.

Anxious patients can be treated with a variety of methods depending on the degree of anxiety.
We have the ability to treat anxious children and adults using these techniques with a caring, empathetic approach, and with accupuncture, inhalation sedation and intravenous sedation.

The two main methods of treatment are inhalation sedation and intravenous sedation during which patients remain awake at all times but are relaxed and able to undergo dental treatment without difficulty.

Inhalation sedation

Inhalation sedation involves the administration of a mixture of nitrous oxide gas and oxygen delivered via a nose mask through a fail safe system. It reduces anxiety and causes relaxation and feelings of happiness. It has been used for many years in dentistry particularly in the treatment of children but can also be used for the treatment of adults alone or in combination with intravenous sedation.

Intravenous sedation.

Intravenous sedation is a stronger form of sedation than inhalation sedation and involves the administration of a drug called midazolam via a vein commonly in the hand or arm. Patients remain awake throughout the procedure, but are very relaxed and often remember none of the treatment undertaken. Intravenous sedation is very effective for patients who are very anxious or who require complicated treatment. It is mainly used for the treatment of adult patients but can be used for the treatment of children in certain circumstances.
